Earlier this week, WYA ?, the collaboration project between Bronx Producer Ja-B and myself was released. It was a bit confusing, because it came earlier than expected based on when he uploaded it and set it to release, however, it's here and I'm excited about it! I haven't released any music "of my own" since December. I put that in quotes because technically, these are Ja-B's songs, released under his name and I'm the featured artist.
We had worked on a(n) (unreleased) song together last year and one day, after talkin about how well that came together (sorry to talk about something you haven't heard yet) he ended up sendin me new beats. 2 of em I knocked out like the next day. Okay honestly idr if it was "the next day" but I do know I sent him them shxts back fairly quick. Both of them ended up bein Night Fog, and Wave of Emotions, creating WYA ?
With Night Fog I knew what I wanted to do immediately in terms of direction, and here I'll break down the process/meaning of the song. On the surface, the premise of the song is the male character reaching out to a woman who he has history with, and requesting she keep him company on a hazy and foggy night. Nights that I personally think feel more lonely for whatever reason.
Originally I started freestyling the words to the hook, like I normally do, and eventually I had the hook complete. When it came time to write the verse, I had the 1st couple bars flow effortlessly and knew how I wanted to end it, so I laid those parts and then the middle was tricky. I wanted to give up and split it into two separate verses (the middle part was just enough time/bars to have the hook there twice), but I chose to not be lazy and continue to keep it one long verse. Once I knew the direction and melody I wanted to use, the words came shortly after and it was time to record those vocals.
Symbolism and metaphors run through-out the track, but some of the more important ones can be found in the hook. Though the city is full of tall buildings that do indeed disappear sometimes when the fog is heavy or low, it wasn't literal skyscrapers being referenced - at least not only those. Skyscrapers is slang for tall women with long legs, or long legs themselves. So the hook bein, "skyscrapers disappear in the night fog" refers to not remembering how it feels to be with that woman, it has become a foggy distant memory, and possibly even 1 big memory meshed together with a bunch of other previous late night loves.
The second part of the hook states, "when the love come down and the high gone // we could run it right back for the encore" meaning, not only after the climax and becoming sober again, but also - the high of a new love, the fun, refreshing, and free feel attached to that eventually does end, but when it does, it doesn't have to be the end, and even if it is - it doesn't mean it has to be the absolute end. We could run that shxt tf back when you ready, u kno my number.
The 1st few bars of the verse u can hear and feel the confidence that the character possesses, but throughout the verse u hear it not only be challenged, but it also start diminishing. He even discredits and dismisses advice and help from outsiders - due to him thinkin he's got it like that. U first start to see him questioning himself when he questions the woman, "comin over? Baby hit me, when you coming over?" U hear the uncertainty and desperation. Her response comes as a shock to him, especially since "it come to that, I don't ever get no refusal." She reads him and puts him in his place so much so that he has to step back and re-assess himself and the situation - he humbly apologizes after swallowing his pride, and they pick up where they've left off.
